Mr. Popper’s Penguins

2011Mr Popper's Penguins

Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury

Mr. Popper’s Penguins turned out to be better than I had anticipated. Jim Carrey was his wacky self but didn’t go over the top.

I found myself laughing quite a bit and that’s pretty rare for me with a Jim Carrey movie. Must have been the penguins. HA!

I can’t say too much about Mr. Popper’s Penguins without giving too much away. I just know that I will probably be adding this to my collection of DVDs in the near future. It is that Fantastic! Well, that and I just love penguins!!

I truly think you, and your kids if you have them, will enjoy this movie. Give it a whirl!

Trespass

2011Trespass

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Cam Gigandet, Liana Liberato

Trespass, my first movie for 2012… what a bomb.

This time it wasn’t just a crappy script, it was also crappy acting. I felt like they had pulled the gunmen off the street and said ‘here, act’ and let them do whatever. Horrible, horrible, horrible. And what gunman brings his coked up girlfriend along to a home invasion? I mean really, who does that?!

Nicole Kidman’s performance was almost unbearable. I have never seen her acting so… half-assed. Usually if her movies suck it’s because of a bad script or bad directing, this time, there was that and bad acting. What came over her?! Bad Nicole! Bad, bad, bad!

Nic Cage… Well, you either love him or you hate him. I personally love him. He’s pretty consistent in his rolls so I know what to expect going in. I think the last time he really rocked the silver screen was in 2009 in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans. Now that was the Nic Cage we all would love to see every time.

Anyway, unless you want to watch a movie with crappy acting and approximately 85 minutes of continual screaming I don’t recommend Trespass… at all… nope… thumbs are way down…

There aren’t even any good explosions…

50/50

201150/50

Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick

50/50 was the final movie I watched in 2011. I have to say, I saved the best for last.

Levitt gives a great performance, one of his best to date.

Adam (Levitt), a 27-yr-old  who works at a radio station, has just been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. With the help of his best friend (Rogen) his therapist (Kendrick), Adam struggles through to beat the disease and discover what is most important in life.

Through all the emotions Adam goes through he manages to keep his sense of humor and a sense of calm.

50/50 is a great movie, I highly recommend it. I have to say, it is emotionally challenging at points but definitely worth watching.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

2011Crazy, Stupid, Love

Starring: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone

Crazy, Stupid, Love is a fantastic movie!

Cal (Carell) and Emily (Moore) have three kids and are happily married, until Emily asks for a divorce. Cal, newly semi-single and depressed needs to find his his way in the singles scene after a 25-year hiatus, and Jacob (Gosling) is just the man for the job.

With Jacob’s help, new clothes and a few lessons on finding the manhood he lost many years ago Cal is on his way. First pickup, the ‘sexy-cute’ school teacher…

Seems after the first one it’s not so hard, Cal is pickin’ ’em up easy as pie… until his wing man goes AWOL. It all starts at the parent-teacher conference…

Watching the end of the parent-teacher scene a line from Dan in Real Life kept running through my head, “I am the murderer of love”. Now, if you haven’t seen it, you must.. It’s pretty good.

And by the way, it is.. Love… Crazy, Stupid that is..

Two thumbs way up.

Cars 2

2011Cars 2

Starring (the voices of): Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy and Michael Caine

I was a little disappointed in Cars 2. With five years in between pictures you would think Pixar would have done a better job making Cars 2 a little more entertaining.

In several places I found my attention waning. If it wasn’t for Mater and his silly antics I would have definitely fallen asleep.

I can’t say that I would recommend this movie, it’s just a flop. Well, maybe if you are looking for something to watch while trying to nap.

Pixar… If you plan a Cars 3 (let’s hope not), please review the first Cars film and do a little more of that and a lot less of Cars 2.

Larry Crowne

2011Larry Crowne

Starring: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Sarah Mahoney

I really liked Larry Crowne. I’d probably watch it again.

Larry (Hanks) has just been ‘downsized’ from his job for not having a college degree and therefore no growth potential.

In order to make sure that doesn’t happen in his next job he heads to the community college. There he takes several courses, one of which is a class on public speaking taught by Mercedes Tainot (Roberts).

Mercedes has lost the passion in her marriage as well as the passion for teaching, until she begins her class with Larry.

Watch and see how Larry overcomes the life changes of unemployment, school and some new friends. Does Mercedes become one of his friends or just stay his teacher? Does Larry thrive in his new life? Watch and see.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

2011On Stranger Tides

Starring: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane

I wasn’t at all impressed with this Pirates movie. There wasn’t as much action or adventure or anything really as the last three movies.

The action was somewhat lame. The kings men just shooting at Sparrow and trying to capture him. Pffft! The only real adventure was the lot of them tromping through the jungle in search of… see now I forget. That is how boring it was.

Seems like are they’re starting to beat that dead horse. And Penelope Cruz, what was that all about? GADS! Talk about annoying. The movie is limping along as it is and then *BAM* there she is to sink the ship, so to speak.

For shame, the lot of you that signed on to do this film. Perhaps you should have signed on for a little more creativity too.

And for the love of all that’s gonna keep me from going postal, if there is a Pirates 5… Please, please, please let’s make it interesting, adventurous and action packed!

I’ll be handing this one (and Rob Marshall) and great big steaming pile of poo.
